For more than 25 years, the stylist Panos Yiapanis has been seeking out precious antique finds from all over the world, to add to an extensive archive of designer fashion. In 2020, his storage space and some of the collection was damaged irreparably by water. While the pieces in question are impossible to wear in the conventional sense of the word – contaminated with mould, streaked with strange colour – Yiapanis chose to document them one last time before parting with them. Shot with Rianne Van Rompaey and Joel Kemp, the images on these pages feature garments and fragments of garments, undergarments and underpinnings, dating from 1850 to 1910. They have been refashioned and repurposed, then layered over a custom plastic base – used both as an aesthetic contrast and to protect the skin. Reflecting the attention to detail and construction that time in history is known for, an overloaded aesthetic is taken apart at the seams. The story is, Yiapanis says, “my way of saying goodbye” to these clothes.
