Just under two months ago, we published a guide to ‘underground’ rapper Fakemink, but that title is already starting to seem outdated. Since then, the 20-year-old east Londoner has been brought out on stage by Drake, followed by Frank Ocean, and photographed by Hedi Slimane. Hell, even Timothée Chalamet and Caroline Polachek were spotted sniffing around Mink’s highly sought-after London show last Friday (29 August), at which the self-proclaimed “London’s Saviour” performed in the fully-functional All Star Boxing Gym in Maida Vale. “I see it in the stars like it’s meant to be, the game and the industry stay aimed at me,” Fakemink rapped in 2023 track “Kill Everything ”, and it seems that vision is finally starting to become reality.

But, despite this rapidly increasing notoriety, Fakemink clearly isn’t pandering to a mainstream audience just yet. Mink has long embraced a SoundCloud era-esque delivery that revels in unfiltered and clipping vocals and, throughout the show, the enigmatic artist could be heard shouting “Turn me up! I need the distortion!” to his DJ. We do hope poor Timmy brought earplugs.

Meanwhile, as the high-energy show reached its final moments, the packed, overwhelmingly Gen-Z crowd could be heard requesting a number of SoundCloud-only releases. It was a moment reflective of the cult-like frenzy his fanbase has reached in recent months, with longtime listeners using the pejorative “newgen” to describe the new influx of fans that followed Drake’s co-sign. Perhaps in response, then, many attendees – of whom not one was born before the year 2000 – turned up to the gig rocking meme text tees and Y2K trinkets to prove their devotion to Fakemink’s signature net native fashion sense.

Fandom feuds notwithstanding, however, the show marked a pivotal moment in Fakemink’s career. Tickets were going for upwards of £200 on resale platforms, likely fuelled by swirling speculation surrounding Mink’s relationship with Frank Ocean and mounting anticipation for a new album rumoured to release next year, and fans queued around the block hours ahead of doors opening in order to guarantee a ringside view of the rapidly rising star.

We caught up with with 12 of Fakemink’s most hardcore fans at the event.
