Études Studio unveils its 28th edition of the Études Books collection with a new volume, ‘Seeing with’ by Erik Gustafsson. The book, dedicated to the work of the Swedish photographer, sees his original photographs reworked. Images are blurred, overlaid, and contrasted as he explores the materiality and memories of photographs. Produced in a limited run of 500 copies, the book, with its pink cloth embossed cover and full-colour offset printing, is a work of art itself. The book is more than just a collection of photography; it is a vibrant, textural look at Gustafsson’s work that not only allows viewers to experience his vision but also gives them a glimpse into Études Studio’s brand identity.
“These photographs, often rooted in the everyday, are not tied to a specific place or time; they emerge from an observation of the ordinary and only truly come to life when they find context, a dialogue between themselves, and with those who look at them. For me, an image is never finished: it can always be reused, replayed, placed in a new situation. What interests me is the way it can generate new ways of seeing, foster empathy and build connection,” Gustafsson noted in a release.

Gustafsson was born in Sweden in 1987 and graduated with an MFA in Photography from the Valand Academy in Gothenburg. Now residing and working in Gothenburg, Gustafsson explores material, temporal, and conceptual dimensions of photography, examining the perception and transformation of images. His work displays the tension between analogue and digital formats, creating snapshots that reference both archival and contemporary visions. Gustafsson’s books, This Is Farewell (2020), Between Thought and Action (2022), and A House of Clay (2024), have spotlighted the physicality of photography, bringing his work to life on paper. Alongside this endeavour, Gustafsson has also been a part of several exhibitions in Sweden, Norway, Spain, and Paris. This November, he will be shown alongside two other photographers at the Institut Suédois’ ‘Material of Memories’.
“What moves us in Erik’s relationship to his medium is his ability to observe and narrate the world with simplicity and generosity. His images reflect the breadth of his gaze. They teach us to pay attention to fragments of the real. His practice – at once free and precise – questions contemporary photography in all its multiplicity: between analogue and digital, between urgency of gesture and reflection on our image-driven society,” co-founders and artistic directors Aurélien Arbet & Jérémie Egry shared in a release.
Études Studio was founded in 2012 as a brand offering a variety of products, varying from menswear to book publishing. The Paris-based brand often collaborates with a range of talents to highlight diverse backgrounds, cultures, methods, and references. Alongside the studio, Études Books was established as an independent publisher, aiming to present a new photographer or artist with each publication. ‘Seeing with’ is a new venture for Études Books, furthering their editorial projects in a way that champions the conversion of design and visual thought.

‘Seeing with’ by Erik Gustafsson is available at the Études Studio flagship store at 14 rue Debelleyme, 75003 Paris, selected international bookstores, and at etudesstudio.com.
