“RABBITHOLE”
“This song I wrote on my birthday last year, and it’s actually a very anxious song. It’s about the feeling of having a panic attack, and it is also the introduction into the RABBITHOLE EP world. It’s basically accidentally falling into the world, into the hole, and falling deeper and deeper. It captures that feeling of not even realizing that you’re panicking but just starting that journey.”
“ALL THESE KIDS”
“ALL THESE KIDS feels like the song that my alter ego sings—the confident front I put on when I’m spiraling and panicking. I wrote this song as the first ‘room’ you fall into when you’re entering the rabbithole. It feels like the Queen of Hearts; like you’re walking in, discovering this Queen of Hearts, and you’re like, ‘Whoa, where am I and what’s happening?’ And she’s singing these lyrics to you.”
“9 LIVES”
“’9 LIVES’ is one of the most vulnerable songs I’ve written. It’s very sad, and it’s my first acoustic ballad. It’s also a callback to the RABBITHOLE world, like once you stumble out of the Queen of Hearts room, you’re realizing that this front I’ve been putting on is fading. I’m coming face-to-face with the fear of messing up and the fear of people giving up on me. It feels like Alice in the Woods, crying—that’s what I really envisioned when placing it in this world.”
“SUGARCOAT”
“’SUGARCOAT’ is the first track where it feels like things are shifting and starting to turn up. “9 LIVES” is definitely rock bottom, the low point of the hole. Then “SUGARCOAT” is like you’re sniffling up your tears, and you walk into a tea party. The moment you walk in, you realize everyone is telling you, ‘It’s not that deep. Just add some sugar and lie a little to get through it.’ That’s what “SUGARCOAT” is: just add a spoonful of sugar, and everything will be okay, and the medicine will go down.”
“THE PART”
“’THE PART’ is the final track of the EP, and it feels like the transition to getting out of the hole. It’s like the growing-up song. It’s as if Alice ate a piece of a cookie and is returning to her original form, maybe even stronger. That’s what “THE PART” is about—acknowledging insecurities and realizing I can be what I want to be. This song brings this world to a close, and I’m so excited for you all to hear the entire EP. These are some of the most fun songs I’ve worked on, visually, musically, and creatively. Thank you so much.”
