Since its creation in 1964, the Pirelli Calendar has been an emblem of glamour and sensuality. What began as a corporate gift for garages and car dealerships to hang in their offices has arguably become more well-known than the Italian tyre manufacturers it was first conceived to advertise. Over the decades, the iconic calendar has featured work by some of the industry’s most lauded photographers, from Harri Peccinotti to Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, Bruce Weber, and Richard Avedon. Its glossy pages have included portraits of stars such as Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Kate Moss, Nastassja Kinski, Serena Williams, Amy Schumer, Patti Smith, Yoko Ono, Fran Lebowitz, Adwoa Aboah, Sophia Loren, Penélope Cruz, Naomi Watts and many, many more.

The 2025 Pirelli Calendar, launching today, is shot by Ethan James Green and responds to the theme “Refresh and Reveal”. Comprising 24 images of 12 subjects (one black and white, one colour), the portraits in the 51st edition were shot on the beaches of Miami’s Virginia Key Beach Park and an off-site studio set up. This year’s roster of featured faces includes beloved American actress, model, and activist Hunter Schafer, La Haine’s Vincent Cassel, British actors John Boyega and Jodie Turner-Smith, Squid Game’s Hoyeon Jung, Sex Education’s Simone Ashley and a self-portrait of the photographer himself (an ex-model). He’s the only one who appears naked. “I put myself in the calendar because the only person I could tell to be completely nude was myself,” he explains. “To be naked in front of that many people was quite freeing.”

Green describes it as “an unexpected gift” to become part of this line-up of illustrious image-makers. “To be included among this group of legendary photographers who shot the Calendar before me – many of whom inspired my approach to photography. It was a great honour and felt like a stamp of approval.” His favourites from the calendar’s history include Richard Avedon and Herb Ritts, which he feels really “capture the models and create beautiful, timeless images”. “That was a big part of what I wanted to achieve,” he says, “something people can look back on in 20 or 30 years that won’t feel dated and hopefully will be referenced in the future.”

This year’s edition has been created with the guiding principle of reflecting a more contemporary vision of beauty while honouring the spirit of the original calendar. “Our general idea of beauty has expanded so much from what it used to be,” says the New York-based photographer. “I was excited to explore beauty today and to be able to present it in a context like the Pirelli Calendar, which has always celebrated it. We called the concept ‘Refresh and Reveal’ because we’re returning to the  calendar’s origins and celebrating the body in new ways that reflect the current moment.”
