ポーランドの注目デザイナー、ヨアンナ・ハヴロット【インタビュー】

ポーランド文化を世界に発信する同国の国家機関であるAdam Mickiewicz Institute。

2025年大阪・関西万博に合わせた一連のイベント「Po!land」を主催し、パビリオンの枠を超え、ポーランドの豊かな文化プログラムを大阪の中心部で展開する取り組みを行っている。

その1つとして、「Wearable Art（身にまとうアート）」を制作する注目のデザイナー Joanna Hawrotによる展示「ヨアンナ・ハヴロット：ウェアラブルアート – 見えざる糸」が、大丸心斎橋店にて6月24日（火）まで開催中。

日本の「着物」を着想源としながら、幅広いアーティストの芸術や人々の経験を布に織り込んできたJoanna。

今回はポーランドの写真家 Zuza Krajewskaと共に撮影した12名の女性のポートレートを通じて、年齢、職業、ジェンダーの異なるひとりひとりのありように光を当てた。

会場ではそれらの写真と映像に加え、約30点ものJoannaのテキスタイル、さらにAngelika Markulの彫刻作品で構成される大規模なインスタレーションを展開。

すべてが一体となって生まれるエネルギーは、衣服が個人のストーリーを伝える芸術になり得ることを示している。

Lula Japan Webでは、今回で8度目の来日果たしたJoannaに独占インタビューを実施。

The Adam Mickiewicz Institute—polish state institution that promotes Polish culture around the world, is organizing ‘Po!land’, a series of events accompanying the World Expo 2025.

This initiative expands Poland’s rich cultural program beyond the space of national pavilions to make its mark at the very heart of the Osaka city.

As part of the exhibition, ‘Joanna Hawrot: Wearable Art － Unseen Threads’ by Joanna Hawrot, an upcoming designer who creates “Wearable Art” is being held at Daimaru Shinsaibashi until June 24th (Tue.).

Joanna, who is inspired by the Japanese ‘kimono’ and has woven the art of a wide range of artists and people’s experiences into fabrics.

This time, through the portraits of 12 women taken with Polish photographer Zuza Krajewska, the exhibition highlights the different ages jobs, and genders of each of them.

At the exhibition, in addition to these photographs and videos, there will be some 30 pieces of her textile works, as well as a larger installation consisting of sculptures by Angelika Markul.

The energy created by the combination of all these elements shows that clothing can be an art form that tells a personal story.

Lula Japan Web had an exclusive interview with Joanna, who is visiting Japan for the 8th time.

－デザイナーを志したきっかけ、そして現在に至るまでの経歴を教えてください。

デザインを始めたのは14年前です。大学では法学を学んでいましたが、卒業してすぐにデザインの学校に入りました。

きっかけになったのは、クラクフにある日本美術技術博物館（通称、マンガ館）です。マンガ館には浮世絵をはじめ、伝統的なものから現代アーティストの作品までさまざまなコレクションがあります。音楽、武道、演劇、書道など、そこで出合った日本文化からは大きなインスピレーションを受けました。

そして日本の衣服——着物を目にした時、その形を現代のヨーロッパのファッションに翻訳したいと思ったんです。そしてクラクフで、「HAWROT」と名づけた自分のブランドを立ち上げました。

－What made you decide to become a designer, and what is your background up to the present?

I started designing 14 years ago. I studied law at university, but enrolled in a design school right after graduation.

What inspired me was the Manggha Museum of Japanese Art and Technology（commonly known as ‘Manggha Museum’）in Kraków, Poland. The Manggha Museum has a various collection of traditional art, including Ukiyo-e, and pieces by contemporary artists. The Japanese culture such as music, martial arts, theater, calligraphy and more, gave me a huge inspiration.

And the Japanese clothing—when I saw the kimono, I wanted to translate its form into contemporary fashion for Europe. Then I started my own brand which I named “HAWROT” in Kraków, Poland.

－日本文化をヨーロッパに向けて翻訳するという行為に、難しさを感じることはありますか。

始めが一番の難関だと感じます。

他の国や地域の美学のコピーや盗用にならないように、自分なりの言語を見つけなければなりませんから。

－Do you find any difficulty in translating Japanese culture for Europe?

I feel the beginning is the most difficult part.

I have to find my own language because we must not copy or stolen the aesthetics of other countries and regions.

－「Wearable Art（身にまとうアート）」とも呼ばれる作品はどのように制作されるのでしょうか。

プロセスは、コンテンポラリーアートをファブリックに落とし込むことから始まります。そしてデザインしたファブリックからコレクションを作り、コレクションをアートピースとしてどのように展示するかを考えるのです——写真や映像など、あらゆる芸術的手法と組み合わせながら。

「Wearable Art（身にまとうアート）」は私にとって、「感情」と強く結びついています。制作しているドレスやシャツ、コートは、人々の身体と反応し、毎日触れることができる普遍的な芸術と言えます。

－How does the work which is also called “Wearable Art” get created?

The process begins by translating contemporary art into fabric. Then I create collections from the fabrics I design, and figure out how to display the collections as art pieces—combining them with photography, video, and all other artistic methods.

“Wearable Art” is strongly connected to ‘emotion’ for me. The dresses, shirts, and coats I make are universal art that react with the human body and can be touched every day.

－多くのアーティストとコラボレーションされていますね。好きな作品や作家について教えてください。

私は自分の創作やデザインにおいて、常に「感情」を追求しています。ですから、エモーショナルで自由や強さを感じさせるアートおよびアーティストに惹かれるのです。

新しいコレクションを作る時も、まず感情を見つけてからコラボレーションへと発展させます。例えば悲しみに関連したコレクションを作りたい時は、悲しみを表現するアーティストを探す、といった風に。

具体名を挙げるなら、書の芸術「筆舞」を行う浅井微芳さんは、コラボレーションしたいと感じた芸術家の1人です。

また、5年前に出会ったフランスを拠点とする芸術家 Angelika Markulの彫刻と絵画が大好きです。Angelikaさんの彫刻は今回の私たちの展示にも含まれています。彼女の作品からインスピレーションを得て、セクシュアリティ、そして女性であることをテーマにしたコレクション「THE PLEASURE IS MINE」を制作しました。

－You have collaborated with many artists. Could you tell us about some of your favorite works and artists?

I am always seeking ‘emotion’ in my creations and designs. So I am attracted to art and artists that have a sense of emotion, freedom, and strength.

When I create a new collection, I find the emotion first. For example, if I want to create a collection related to sadness, I look for artists who express sadness.

To name a few, Biho Asai who performs the art of calligraphy ‘Fudemai’ was one of the artists I wanted to collaborate with.

I also love the sculptures and paintings of France-based artist Angelika Markul, whom I met five years ago. Her sculptures are also included in our exhibition. I was inspired by her work and created a collection ‘THE PLEASURE IS MINE’ which is about sexuality and being a woman.

－今回の写真と映像を撮影したZuza Krajewskaさんとの協同作業はどのようなものでしたか？

Zuzaさんとは6〜7年にわたってコラボレーションをしてきました。今回は「十二単」を着想源に、ポーランドと日本から6名ずつ、計12名の女性のポートレートを撮影しています。皆プロフェッショナルのモデルではなく一般の人たちで、ティーンエイジャーから年配の方まで、実に多様な年齢や属性から参加してもらいました。

私たちが最も重要だと考えたのは、彼女たちに会い、彼女たちを知り、彼女たちを見ること——そして私の衣装を着てもらうことを通して、彼女たちに自分自身を表現するための声を与えることでした。

－How was it working with Zuza Krajewska, who shot the photographs and videos for this project?

I have been collaborating with Zuza for 6 to 7 years. This time, we took portraits of 12 women, six each from Poland and Japan, using ‘Juni-hitoe’ as our inspiration. They were not professional models but ordinary people, from teenagers to the elderly, a great variety of ages and backgrounds.

What we considered most important was to meet these women, get to know them, see them—and through having them wear my costumes, give them a voice to express themselves.

－ポーランドの女性と日本の女性にはどのような違いがあると感じますか？

プロジェクトが始まる前は多くの違いがあることを想像していました。でも撮影を通じて、両者はよく似ていると感じたんです。私たちは皆勇敢で、繊細で、同じ悩みや願望を持っています。

－What differences do you feel there are between Polish and Japanese women?

Before the project began I imagined there would be many differences. However, through the shooting, I realized that we are very similar. We are all brave, sensitive, and have the same worries and desires.

－本展に寄せた想いを教えてください。ご自身の今後の活動にはどのような影響を与えると考えますか？

ビジネス、ファッション、アート、テクノロジーが融合した国際的なイベントである万博の連携企画として、このような展示ができたことはとても光栄です。大丸心斎橋店の大きなご協力のもと、大丸装飾チームと協働できたことも非常に楽しく、意義あるものでした。

大阪出身のアーティスト 笹岡由梨子さんとのコラボレーションも新たに始まり、彼女の個展のテーマである物理学者 Maria Skłodowska-Curieの人生をイメージしたファブリックを制作しました。

これをきっかけに、日本の方々、日本のファッション界、アート界が私たちのことをもっと知ってくれることを願っています。

－What are your thoughts on this exhibition? How do you think it will affect your future activities?

It is a great honor to have such an exhibition in conjunction with Expo, an event that combines business, fashion, art, and technology. Working alongside the Daimaru decoration team was incredibly enjoyable and significant, largely thanks to the tremendous support from Daimaru Shinsaibashi.

We have also begun a new collaboration with the artist Yuriko Sasaoka from Osaka and created fabrics inspired by the life of the physicist Maria Skłodowska-Curie, who is the theme of her exhibition.

We hope that this will be an opportunity for the Japanese people and the Japanese fashion and art industries to get to know us more.

アートには、トラウマを癒す力——暗い感情を光り輝くものへと変容させる力があるということです。

－ Could you please share any message you would like to share with the visitors and readers of Lula Japan Website?

I mean that art has the power to heal trauma—to transform dark emotions into shining ones.

特徴となるのは、着物をはじめとする日本文化の美意識や型からの着想、そしてさまざまなアーティストとのコラボレーション。
その作品は「Wearable Art（身にまとうアート）」として世界的に知られ、パリ、東京、ニューヨークなど数々の主要都市でコレクションを発表している。

A designer and artist representing Poland. With the concept of “FROM FASHION TO ART”, she has created her eponymous fashion brand “HAWROT”.
The brand is characterized by its inspiration from the aesthetics and patterns of Japanese culture, including the kimono, as well as its collaborations with various artists.
Her works are known worldwide as “Wearable Art”, and have been featured in collections in Paris, Tokyo, New York, and many other major cities.
Her first visit to Japan was in 2016, and this will be the 8th time.
