The Karate Kid franchise is coming back in a way that brings together multiple generations of senseis.
The first trailer for Karate Kid: The Legends has been released, and it features Ralph Macchio — the star of the original trilogy who played Daniel LaRusso— and Jackie Chan, who played Karate teacher Mr. Han in 2010’s Karate Kid film.
Legends stars Ben Wang as a student named Li Fong who becomes a protege to both Daniel and Mr. Han. Wang’s athletic prowess should be on display in the film because he was picked after a worldwide search that featured thousands of actors auditioning for the role — with him winning because of his variety of skills in karate, taekwondo, and kung fu.
The synopsis of the film reads: “In Karate Kid: Legends, after a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother. Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn’t want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere. When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition – but his skills alone aren’t enough. Li’s kung fu teacher Mr. Han enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown.”
In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Wang revealed his excitement for being able to play the lead role. “I was the target audience when that movie came out. I was exactly the age of the character,” Wang said. “That whole movie takes place in Beijing, and I’d just come back from living for a year in Beijing. Also, I grew up watching Jackie Chan movies. He is the first memory I have of knowing what an actor is. It was all of my favorite things in one place.”
Directed by Jonathan Entwistle, Karate Kid: Legends, which will include actors Johsua Jackson, Ming-Na Wen, and Sadie Stanley in the cast, is set to come to theaters on May 30.
