Marlon Wayans has weighed in on the Drake and Kendrick Lamar feud.
The actor-comedian appeared on Real 92.3 radio program Big Boy’s Neighborhood this week, and around the 26-minute mark, the show’s host asked Wayans how much he paid attention to the rappers’ ongoing beef. Since March, Kendrick and Drizzy have been engaged in an ongoing rap feud following the release of Kendrick’s “Like That” collaboration with Future and Metro Boomin, where he dissed Drake and J. Cole. While the latter responded before dropping out of the beef entirely, Drake persisted, albeit losing in the public’s eyes.
Around the 26-minute mark of the video below, Wayans discussed his shock about hearing their back-and-forth diss tracks during a road trip, even joking that he thought Kendrick “was gonna do a whole album on [Drake’s] daddy’s mustache.”
“It was a beautiful battle. And I don’t think either one should feel bad,” the Bel-Air star said. “I don’t think Drake should feel bad. What they did collectively for that entertainment, how we all felt, that was a Super Bowl Halftime moment for me. To be a part of that whole week that was one of the greatest weeks in hip-hop.”
He added that “there’s always going to be a loser,” but suggested that Drake could make a “strong” comeback, comparing him to professional athletes like Sugar Ray Leonard. Wayans also noted that Drake simultaneously took on Future, Metro Boomin and more.
“But look how many people it took. This was like he was Thanos and all the Avengers was coming after him. I gotta give Drake his credit for standing toe-to-toe, like, ‘Nah, I got something for you. … Kendrick just slipped through the cracks. Kendrick is just special and different and and hit him from an angle that it was like therapy. He hit him in the soul. You can’t beat that.”
Wayans went on to compare “Not Like Us” to Nas’ “Ether,” Jay-Z’s “The Takeover” and Ice Cube’s “No Vaseline,” all considered some of the best rap diss tracks of all-time.
“It wasn’t just the song, you had everybody–people that don’t know how to crip walk crip-walking you had Bloods crip-walking,” Wayans joked.
While reiterating that Kendrick has “soul,” Wayans shared his curiosity in Drake’s comeback and whether he’ll return “evolved.” “I feel like just because you lost a fight don’t mean you lost the war,” he said.
Wayans also shared his disappointment with Drake suing UMG, iHeartRadio and Spotify over “Not Like Us” for alleged streaming inflation and defamation.
“I wish I had his number. I’m like, ‘Hey, maybe you could threaten the suit but don’t let the paperwork go through,” Wayans joked.
