Caitlin Clark, who’s been named TIME‘s Athlete of the Year, doesn’t think she’s as “controversial” as she’s been pinned to be.
The Indiana Fever guard saw massive success in her WNBA debut this year but received comparisons to her women’s basketball peers, namely Angel Reese. While the 22-year-old sports star is privy to the sports debates, she’s learned not to put much stock into them.
“I tell people I feel like the most controversial person,” she told the publication. “But I am not. It’s just because of all the storylines that surround me. I literally try to live and treat everybody in the same exact respectful, kind way. It just confuses me at times.”
But with Clark earning an estimated $11 million in endorsements this year, including deals with Nike and Gatorade, race has also been a topic that arises when it comes to the athlete’s popularity.
“I want to say I’ve earned every single thing, but as a White person, there is privilege,” Clark said. “A lot of those players in the league that have been really good have been Black players. This league has kind of been built on them.”
She continued, “The more we can appreciate that, highlight that, talk about that, and then continue to have brands and companies invest in those players that have made this league incredible, I think it’s very important. I have to continue to try to change that. The more we can elevate Black women, that’s going to be a beautiful thing.”
In terms of Reese, while Clark admitted that they’re “not best friends,” they’re “very respectful of one another.”
“Yes, we have had tremendous battles. But when have I ever guarded her? And when has she guarded me?” Clark asked.
“The only thing people cared about was this controversy that was really fabricated and made up, and then that has continued to be the case ever since.”
Reese, who plays for the Chicago Sky, spoke to Speedy Morman about her on-court rivalry with Clark during ComplexCon 2024 last month, sharing that the two have played against each other since childhood.
