Paris Hilton’s mother, Kathy, wasn’t in support of her daughter doing reality TV when she joined her longtime BFF Nicole Richie for The Simple Life.

Hilton and Richie, who star on the new Peacock three-part special Paris & Nicole: The Encore, a spinoff of their aforementioned 2000s reality show, appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show and revisited The Simple Life. But early in the conversation, around the two-minute mark, Hilton revealed that her mother wasn’t a fan of the decision.

“When I got the call to do the show, my mom immediately said, ‘Do not do this. You are crazy,'” Hilton recalled.

When asked about why her mother thought it was a “bad idea,” Hilton added that she may have been “scared.”

“It was the unknown. This was the first reality show. She had no idea what we were gonna get ourselves into,” Hilton continued. “I can imagine she was probably nervous, like, ‘Paris is going to be somewhere with a camera following her 24/7.’ It was just such a new genre of television that she didn’t know what to expect.”

But after taking a look at The Simple Life, Kathy changed her mind. “The next morning after she watched it, she was like, ’Oh my god, I was wrong. That show is incredible. You and Nicole are comedy gold. I’ve never laughed so hard,'” Hilton said. “She said, ‘I was wrong for once.’ I was like, ‘Okay, Mom. I’ll give you that.'”

The Simple Life ran for five seasons from 2003 to 2007, concluding around the time that Hilton and Richie had a reported falling out. The two have long since repaired their friendship, which, during a Los Angeles Times interview, Hilton blamed on toxic celebrity culture in the 2000s.

“During the 2000s, especially, the media was targeting a certain group of girls that Nicole and I were part of,” Hilton told the publication. “So just a lot of the time [they were] inventing stories, trying to pit women against each other, trying to create feuds when there was none.”

“It was frustrating,” she continued. “If you were in [Hollywood], you knew what they were doing, but the outside world had no idea.”
