Toasty Digital has released his latest mix — The Notorious GNX — a Notorious B.I.G.-themed mashup of Kendrick Lamar’s GNX album.
The project features songs from GNX but reimagined from the iconic samples and beats from some of the Notorious B.I.G.’s biggest songs. In a statement to Complex, Toasty revealed that the premise for the project is “What if Kendrick was the reincarnation of a different hip-hop legend?”
The Notorious GNX is made up of five tracks: “big hearted (heart pt. 6”),” “cali off (rereincarnated)” “madison square garden (man at the garden),” and “crushing murals (wacced out murals).” They feature some of Biggie’s most famous beats such as “Big Poppa.”
Toasty’s mashups have become must-listens for hip-hop fans in recent years. In 2022, he meshed together Ye’s Donda and Frank Ocean’s Blonde in a project, that included an exciting visual component, called “Blonda.” In a statement to us at the time, he revealed its origin and original plans.
“I’ve been teasing this mix since before Donda was even officially announced so it’s a miracle that it all came together,” Toasty explained. “Originally I wanted this one to cap off the whole 2049 universe but there’s just too much Kanye material I still want to cover. The Jesus Is King stems are available now so that’s probably where I’m headed.”
Toasty also opened up about getting really proficient at using Yeezy Tech and Kano’s Stem Player device.
“The stem player is dope (as a concept, less so in practice because it’s impossible to hold comfortably). Really game-changing are the stems themselves though,” Toasty explained. “Ye’s notorious for endlessly reworking his songs and now he’s given his fans the tools to do the same thing. Fans have come to expect all media to be interactive now, even music, and Ye is innovating to meet that challenge.”
Before that, Toasty tackled a mix of K. Dot and Ye in Good Kid, Twisted Fantasy.
