Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg sat down for a rare live interview with N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN for a live taping of Drink Champs during day 1 of ComplexCon in Las Vegas.
Towards the end of the interview, which was filled with gems, the conversation turned to the subject of Stevie Wonder and if he can actually see.
Stevie’s blindness was brought up by N.O.R.E., to which Snoop replied:
“On everything I love, Stevie Wonder does FaceTime me,” Snoop said. “I can’t make this shit up. I was in there chilling, getting my hair done with my hair and my phone and my hairstylist is like, ‘Did that say Stevie Wonder?’ I said, yep. I went boop and he was like, ’N**ga, I’ve been looking for you.’
Dre also chimed in with his own story of Stevie calling him early in the morning and requesting that he send him a text.
“No, Stevie Wonder calls me like at 5:00 AM and he’s asking me to text him. I’m like, ‘what the…fuck?’ … I hang up the phone, I’m like, ‘what the fuck this n**ga just say? Stevie wants me to text him,” Dre recalled.
It’s not the first time Dre has joked about Stevie. Back in April, the producer told a story of him running into Stevie Wonder.
“Just bumped into my hero and every musician’s favorite, Stevie Wonder,” Dre wrote earlier this year in a post made to to Instagram. “Stevie said ‘It’s good seeing you.'”
The wide-ranging Drink Champs conversations saw Snoop and Dre discuss a myriad of things. Be on the lookout for the conversation to go live on Complex’s YouTube channel soon.
Uncle Snoop is as active as ever. Earlier this month, he dropped off his Jhené Aiko-featuring song “Gorgeous,” the first single off his forthcoming album Missionary, which Dr. Dre is handling. The project arrives over 30 years after the Dre-produced Death Row classic, Doggystyle in 1993. Missionary boasts 15 songs with some notable features from 50 Cent and the late Tom Petty.
“This is the first time that we got together and worked on an entire album in 30 years,” Dre told Complex earlier this year. “I feel like it’s some of the best music I’ve ever made and I’m really proud of it.” According to Dre, Snoop exudes “a certain level of maturity” in this project. “It’s a step above, which it should be at this age with us,” Dre added.
That’s not the only thing the longtime collaborators and friends are working on. Snoop and Dre recently launched their Gin and Juice brand, which fittingly partnered with Drink Champs for ComplexCon.
There are more ComplexCon(versations) events throughout the weekend. Catch Awake NY’s Angelo Baque sitting down with Noah Callahan-Bever for Idea Generation and much more.
