Every holiday season, pro football players get a chance to promote causes and organizations that are close to their hearts. Through the My Cause My Cleats campaign, players step on the field wearing customized cleats sporting the logos, names, and messages of non-profit organizations doing good work in their local communities.

Philanthropic community Stand Together is there to help connect players with the most effective and innovative non-profit leaders who are transforming issues they care about most. For 2024, Stand Together worked with three pro football players around My Cause My Cleats, helping them tell stories about their social impact work and the outsized effect the organizers are having.

The Stand Together My Cause My Cleats partnerships include: Tampa Bay running back Rachaad White supporting CarePortal; New Orleans linebacker Demario Davis supporting Stand Together, which partners with thought leaders to transform education from a one-size-fits-all system to learning that’s tailored to each student’s unique gifts; and Pittsburgh safety Miles Killebrew and his work with Café Momentum Pittsburgh, which utilizes the restaurant environment to equip justice-involved youth with skills, confidence, and opportunities that empower them to thrive.

Each organization is unique and innovative, and every players’ support also comes from a personal interest.

White grew up with friends in the foster care system. Though his own mother tried her best to help and nurture those friends, their experiences were still tough. Hence White’s interest in CarePortal, a technology solution that connects the largest network of caring people to meet the needs of kids and families in crisis.

Before being drafted to play pro football, Davis was a substitute teacher. There, he saw first-hand that different students had different needs, as well as how a “one size fits all” education system failed those students. So, Davis and his wife Tamela Gill-Davis, created Devoted Dreamers to place an emphasis on individualized learning. To scale that vision, they partnered with Stand Together to tap into their network of resources and connections to amplify their impact.

Miles Killebrew is a Steeler standout on the field and off. That’s partly because he takes the Steelers’ commitment to its Pittsburgh community to heart. Thus his passion for the Café Momentum Pittsburgh location. Founded in 2015 by Dallas chef Chad Houser, Café Momentum now has outposts across the country and has successfully worked with over 1,200 youth through its paid internship program, designed to transform the lives of justice-involved youth through culinary and restaurant industry training, as well as wraparound services that provide a system of support. Stand Together came alongside Café Momentum to provide capabilities, a network, and a playbook to help them scale and create even more value by bringing a location to Pittsburg.

The Café Momentum Pittsburgh mini-documentary Killebrew made with Stand Together is embedded above, giving you a chance to see his commitment to the organization, as well as the kitchen skills of Neiko, one of its young interns. Watch the whole way through to see Killebrew gift Neiko a pair of custom Café Momentum cleats, a symbol of everything he’s overcome and a reminder to stay on the right track.

For this year’s My Cause My Cleats, you’re supporting Café Momentum in Pittsburgh. What can you tell us about Café Momentum?
Café Momentum is an award-winning national organization that takes youth who have been in the justice system and gives them an opportunity to reinvent themselves by training in the restaurant industry. They have a brick and mortar location here in Pittsburgh that is a full-service restaurant. You can go inside and enjoy a meal, enjoy excellent service, and it’s all put on by these amazing youth who have completely reinvented themselves in the world of the restaurant industry. It’s awesome. It’s amazing. I am so excited every single time I get to run into these guys.

Can you tell us a little bit about the design on your cleats and how it represents Café Momentum?
Sure. So I have the sweetest cleats in my opinion. I think they’re pretty cool. I can’t wait to wear them. They’re gold. They match our color scheme, but have the Café Momentum logo on them. They’re really simple, really sweet, and pay homage to the logo and the brand.

And who actually designed and created the cleats?
Oh yeah, Cody Sabol. Cody’s a great guy. I’ve worked with him before. He’s a great friend to the Steelers and does amazing work. The Steelers facilitate that for all of the players who want something creative. They will work directly with Cody and he does amazing work.

So when you’re wearing these cleats and you’re working with Café Momentum and Stand Together, does that give you a little extra inspiration on the field? Like playing for a little something more?
Oh, one-thousand percent. Everything that we wear is intentional, of course, and it has a meaning or a purpose. So when I can look down and say, Okay, today I am representing something larger than myself, something larger than just the Pittsburgh Steelers. I am engaging in a community partner that I actually really believe in down to my core, it does give me a little extra oomph. I do want to make a play or two and celebrate Café Momentum when I’m doing it.

Of course. I mean, late in the season, I know the stakes are high and getting a little extra inspiration from a good cause has got to be great. Can you tell us a little bit about working with Stand Together here too and how it ties together with Café Momentum?
Sure. So Stand Together has been absolutely amazing in facilitating this relationship between me and Café Momentum. They’re completely integral. They actually are the reason why I was able to have this short mini movie made.

A little mini documentary.
This little documentary, which was amazing. Stand Together facilitated that and they really bridged the gap in recording it and producing it. They help bridge those gaps between lots of players and organizations. With me in particular, Café Momentum is an example of one of those relationships that they facilitate.

I’ve seen the documentary and it’s awesome. Definitely inspirational. Can you say more about how Stand Together made that happen?
That’s right. Yeah. So Stand Together, they oversee the entire process from my point of view, from Café Momentum’s point of view. They will oversee the entire process of linking us together, really getting the most out of that relationship, understanding the motives of Café Momentum. Why are they doing what they’re doing? Why was I drawn into Café Momentum? And they made the process really easy for me to get involved and to speak about what it is, what my intentions were with Café Momentum, and why I was doing it. And it was a really cool process because Stand Together has a lot of experience connecting the dots between people who want to serve and those that are already doing the serving.

Then I have to ask, what’s your favorite thing to eat at Café Momentum in Pittsburgh?
Oh my goodness. So when I was there last, I was actually able to make a great pasta dish, and you’ll have to forgive me, I asked him a thousand times what it was called. It was so simple though, and I’m a sucker for Italian food.

So I recommend any of the pasta dishes that they make there. They’re all amazing. But this one I had in particular had a great vodka sauce and vegetables. It was really simple. I will say Café Momentum’s cuisine is always top notch, every single time I’ve been lucky enough to have some. They take it very, very seriously. They pay attention to all the details and it’s always a great experience.

Any last places people can go look to support Café Momentum?
Sure, yes. Anyone who wants to get involved with Café Momentum or just see a little bit more about what they’re about, they have a website, cafemomentum.org. And it’s very straightforward. You can find the restaurant in downtown Pittsburgh or maybe there’s one nearby if you’re not local to Pennsylvania. It’s definitely worth going in and checking it out, but if you live too far away and maybe it’s not in your city, going online is an awesome way to see how you can get involved and learn more about the program.

Perfect. Thanks Miles.
Thank you so much. It’s been an honor.
