Could there be something brewing between Stephen A. Smith and Drake?
On the latest episode of The Stephen A. Smith Show, the ESPN personality spoke about the announcement of Kendrick Lamar’s upcoming Grand National Tour with SZA, which includes a stop in Drake’s hometown of Toronto.
Using the power of “trust me, bro,” Smith claimed Drake has seen his YouTube show and heard what he has said about the Toronto rapper. With that in mind, Stephen A. decided to address Drake directly. “I did not say or echo a single negative thing about you. You’re a phenomenal artist. You’re big time,” he said at the 28:07 mark. “What I said was—fact—’Not Like Us’ got you.”
The First Take personality explained that his belief in Kendrick as the victor after “Not Like Us” was rooted entirely in lyricism and not in the aspects that prompted Drake to consider legal action against UMG.
“What I’m saying is, you don’t go the lawyer route in hip-hop over something like this. You take it to the studio. You take it to the streets. That’s all I said,” Smith continued. “I didn’t sit up there and say you can’t answer Kendrick Lamar. I said, ‘You better figure out a way to do so,’ meaning you have the capability, I think, to pull it off. That’s all!”
Stephen A. said that his perspective on the feud always circles back to Drake getting back in the studio.
“The point is Kendrick got you with that song. Come back with one of yours. That’s all I’m saying,” Smith explained. “This is what you do. You come back with yours, or you say, ‘Damn, he got me.'”
“But if you’re gonna be silent. If you’re gonna ghost everybody. If you’re gonna go Down Under,” he said in reference to Drake’s Australia tour which kicks off on the same day as Kendrick’s Super Bowl halftime performance. “If you’re gonna rely on lawyers, then it’s not a good look because that ain’t what hip-hop is. That’s all. And if that’s how you feel, then they’re right when they say, ‘Not like us.'”
Smith also apologized to Drake for any remark the rapper deemed disrespectful, raising speculation about whether the ESPN personality has been made aware of a past comment that upset Drake.
However, the apology may come across as insincere, given that Stephen A. began his rant by describing Drake as “a bit sensitive in these times” and “in his feelings.”
