Frankie Muniz realized he probably wouldn’t have found fame as a child actor without his family’s support.

In a new episode of the Inside of You podcast, the 38-year-old shared more about recent revelations he’s had about his career, and the sacrifices his parents and sister made so he could pursue acting.

He explained to host Michael Rosenbaum that he began acting when he was eight years old in North Carolina. A few years later, when he was around 11 or 12, his parents divorced. He and his mom then went to New York City to go on more auditions and eventually moved to New Jersey after he started booking gigs.

“I remember we tried to get my sister to move up, but she was going to school at the time, [and] didn’t really want to come,” he said at around the 10:55 minute mark. So when he “finally” convinced his sister to move to New Jersey, he landed the titular role in Malcolm in the Middle and moved to Los Angeles. His sister refused to move again and ended up living with their grandparents in New Jersey.

“It was kind of this really weird dynamic to look at now,” he explained. “It actually makes me a little bit sad to realize that me following my dream and the things that I got to do affected every single member of my family.”

He said that he and his sister have discussed this time in their life. “When it’s happening you don’t realize the sacrifice that every single person is making for you.” He was particularly thankful to his grandparents for stepping and being “so willing to help out and do whatever they could do” for his dreams.

“This year, it was the first time I thought about the past enough to think about the sacrifice that people made,” he added. “And it made me really sad. Like it made happy that I had people in my life like that. But it’s just a crazy thought that without that support, probably none of that happens.”

Muniz starred as Malcolm in Malcolm in the Middle from 2000 to 2006, a role that earned him an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nods. He also starred in movies like Big Fat Liar, Agent Cody Banks, Deuces Wild, and Racing Stripes.

In 2008, he took time away from acting to pursue race car driving. In October, he announced he had become a full-time driver for Reaume Brothers Racing and is set to compete in the Nascar Craftsman Truck Series 2025 season.
