Captured through the lens of photographer Oliver Bell, rising R&B artist Ilselena reflects on her creative journey and what lies ahead, penning a heartfelt letter to her younger self.

“This year has been full of surprises, and I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone massively,” British-American musician Ilselena shares. “I’ve recently become part of a music project that has helped me develop so much more as an artist. I’m grateful to have met so many amazing people, and I can’t wait to see what next year brings.” The up-and-coming R&B star is ending the year on a high, reconnecting with her passion for dancing, creating new music, and pushing her creative boundaries while solidifying her place in the craft.

Music is in Ilselena’s DNA — from her father, Kid Creole and the Coconuts’s August Darnell, to her brother Dario (aka Youngr), close-to-home role models have never been in short supply. But now, she’s ready to chart her own course, teasing a new chapter of her artistry where “the sky is the limit.” “I can’t wait to do bigger gigs, work on more music, and keep working hard to reach my goals,” she says. As she prepares for an exciting new year ahead, Ilselena sits down with Wonderland to reflect on her creative roots, the importance of support, and what excites her most about the future, all while writing a letter to her younger self.

Dear little me,

It’s 2024, and I’m sitting on a train headed to Wales to write some music with our big brother, Dario. I wanted to write to you because I know how much you’ve always dreamed of having a career in music—and guess what? It’s happening! It’s even better than we imagined, and all those things you dreamt about are coming true. You’ve released your first single, “Seventeen”, in 2020, and from there, everything started to fall into place.

You’re living in London, you’ve got an amazing group of friends, and yes, a boyfriend. By the way, your friends now call you Ils, but your artist name is ilselena. Dad still calls us Ilselena, and mum still loves to embarrass us with the nickname milsey… I can hear her saying it now! We’ve been lucky to have such a supportive family along the way, to guide and encourage us when we needed it . I think about you often—how far you’ve come, how much you’ve grown into the confident and mature woman you are today. I’m so proud of you, of us, and all the challenges we’ve overcome to get here.

I won’t spoil too much, because life has a way of surprising you, and there’s always something amazing just around the corner. But let me tell you, great things are happening. The future is full of adventure, and I’m beyond excited for you to see it unfold.

Keep trusting yourself, even when things feel uncertain, because everything you’ve worked for is leading you to something incredible. Take risks. Take chances. Don’t be afraid of change. You’ll look back and realise that the moments you feared the most were often the ones that shaped you into the women you are today.
