The indie-rock group dives into family, addiction and recovery on a deeply personal new project.
Formed in the picturesque coastal town of Fernandina Beach, Florida, Flipturn has transformed from a group of friends playing in garages and college houses to a critically acclaimed band headlining sold-out shows. The ensemble—Dillon Basse (lead vocals/bass), Tristan Duncan (lead guitar), Madeline Jarman (bass, backing vocals), Mitch Fountain (synth, guitar), and Devon VonBalson (drums)—delivers a stunning new chapter with their latest project, Sunlight. This release marks a bold and dynamic evolution, unveiling an expansive, heartfelt, and profoundly introspective collection of songs shaped by Basse’s emotionally charged songwriting.
Sunlight bursts with ethereal, evocative, and melodic moments, each underscored by Basse’s exceptional talent for weaving raw emotions with vivid storytelling. The band’s undeniable synergy shines throughout, with rich, textured instrumental arrangements and meticulous production providing a mesmerising backdrop for Basse’s soul-searching lyrics. This emotional depth reaches its pinnacle on the title track, where Basse poignantly reflects on his upbringing and his pivotal role in supporting his mother’s courageous journey to sobriety.
Reflecting on the project’s narratives and themes, Basse shares “‘Sunlight’ might be the most personal and honest song I’ve written lyrically,” says Basse. “I started writing words for it the day my mom had to be driven to rehab again by my little sister. I wanted to tell a story of acceptance of those closest to us for who they are because ultimately they are the people shaping us and changing us the most. My mom took up growing bonsais when she got home from rehab as a hobby to help prevent her from drinking. She would also recite and preach to us the serenity prayer. ‘God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.’ That’s really where the idea for the rest of the song came from. Like a bonsai tree’s branches needing to be cut in order for it to grow, human beings also need to be pruned in order to grow, even if it hurts like a motherfucker.”
