Cape Town’s iconic Mount Nelson hotel marked its 125th anniversary this fall in grand style, hosting the third annual CONFECTIONS x COLLECTIONS (CxC) event from November 5-8. As a celebration of African slow fashion and sustainable design, the five-day showcase, curated by independent publication Twyg, transformed the hotel’s opulent lounge, terrace, and gardens into a creative hub for salon-style fashion shows.

“With the growing global interest in young African talent, I am excited to bring together South Africa’s new wave of designers with two of our West African counterparts,” said Jackie May, founder and editor of Twyg. “At its core, CxC is underpinned by excellence in sustainable design and a diversity of fashion storytelling, and we aim to honour and celebrate these enduring qualities.”

CxC highlighted top talent from across the continent, featuring South African and West African designers whose work beautifully bridged artisanal tradition with contemporary storytelling. Designers included South Africa’s LVMH Prize and 2023 Amiri Prize winner Lukhanyo Mdingi and RICH MNISI, along with Nigeria’s Adeju Thompson of Lagos Space Programme and Bubu Ogisi of IAMISIGO. This dynamic lineup gave attendees the rare chance to connect with the designers and experience Africa’s diverse fashion narratives up close.

For the grand finale, CxC culminated in a group show, uniting past and current designers such as MAXHOSA AFRICA and Sindiso Khumalo, in a spectacular display of Africa’s brightest talents. “In celebrating 125 years of The Nellie, this showcase is just one of many ways Mount Nelson is committed to curating moments of reverie through art, food, and design, drawing inspiration from the continent,” said Tiago Moraes Sarmento, Managing Director of Belmond Southern Africa.
