Ariana Grande – “Petal”

On the lining of Ariana Grande’s “petal”, there’s a jagged edge. With the latest single from her eighth studio album, she haunts and taunts, simmering between belt and whisper, as she sings “Long as she gets the ovation each night / Heartbreak won’t bite, this is paradisе.” It’s a lace-trimmed middle finger to the naysayers on an album where the releases suggest she has quite a bit to say – it appears it’s the return of the Dangerous Woman…

Rachel Chinouriri – “One song away from crying”

And just when we’re “One song away from crying”, British pop darling Rachel Chinouriri returns with a glittering tune ahead of her October-releasing sophomore album; I think I spoke too soon. Pulsing joyous chords against a slightly sombre melody, she unpacks that feeling of being on the “precipice of a night out where you know you need to leave and have to make a decision”, only the decision isn’t at all about the night, but about that inner wrestling with one’s self-value.

Remi Wolf – “Twiggy”

It’s not every day you get to debut a new song with an icon like Hayley Williams, but as is the case for singer-songwriter Remi Wolf, who teased her newest single, “Twiggy” alongside the Paramore singer at the Newport Folk Festival. Between belts and yodels, this folk-fused ballad teases Remi at her most fearless and free.

Karol G – “Matadora”

Karol G plays every part of the “Matadora” on this bold, high-octane anthem that revels in confidence, desire and unapologetic self-possession.
