A collection of tapes boasting unreleased Michael Jackson music have reportedly been discovered in a California storage unit, though fans will most likely never get a shot at hearing them for legal reasons.
Thursday, the Hollywood Reporter’s Nicole Fell published a piece quoting Gregg Musgrove, an ex-California Highway Patrol officer who says the discovery came about after he was informed of a storage unit in the San Fernadno Valley area that was previously used by producer and artist Bryan Loren. Other artists Loren has worked with in his career include Sting and Whitney Houston.
According to Musgrove, some of the songs included on the tapes have been “rumored to exist,” while others have previously “leaked a little bit” in some capacity. Some, however, are said to have never been heard before. Also heard on the tapes, at least per Musgrove, are mid-session conversations in which the King of Pop discusses his artistic intentions for the pre-Dangerous era recordings.
The THR report notes that Jackson’s estate was made aware of the tapes, adding that the estate opted to not claim ownership over them. Still, anyone who might come into possession of the recordings in the future (Musgrove intends to have the tapes on the auction circuit soon) will not legally be able to release their contents.
The collection of tapes is estimated to contain recordings spanning from roughly 1989 through 1991. In November 1991, MJ’s aforementioned Dangerous album was launched, featuring “Black or White.” This was followed in 1995 by HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I and Invincible in 2001, the latter of which stands as Jackson’s final album before his shocking 2009 death.
Fans are now awaiting the arrival of Training Day director Antoine Fuqua’s MJ biopic, titled, simply, Michael. Leading the cast is Jaafar Jackson, MJ’s nephew, while acclaimed Sing Sing and Euphoria actor Colman Domingo is set to play the late Joe Jackson. Lionsgate is slated to roll out the much-anticipated film next October, with Fuqua previously describing it as “the motion picture event that explores the journey of the man who became the King of Pop.”
It’s possible we’ll get a trailer for Michael before year’s end, though nothing has been confirmed.
