ASAP Rocky is expanding his film career.
IndieWire reports that the ASAP Mob member will star in Spike Lee’s new film Highest 2 Lowest, a reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 thriller, High and Low. Rumors of Rocky’s involvement surfaced after set photos showed him playing the character Yung Felon.
Lee confirmed to Deadline that Rocky has a “main role” in Highest 2 Lowest, which is an Apple Original film, in partnership with A24. Denzel Washington, Ice Spice, Jeffrey Wright, and Ilfenesh Hadera also star in the film. Ice’s involvement was announced in April and is her acting debut.
Rocky’s acting debut was 2015’s Dope and he later appeared in 2016’s Zoolander 2. Earlier this year, the “Praise The Lord” rapper also appeared in Rihanna’s short film Born to Steal: Yours, Mine, Ours.
“This is not a remake, this is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s great film,” Lee told Deadline. “In Kurosawa’s film, Toshiro Mifune is a shoemaker. In our film Denzel Washington is a music mogul with his own label and his reputation as the best ears in the business. So, this is the fifth film with the dynamic duo.”
Washington and Lee haven’t worked together since 2006’s Inside Man. Highest 2 Lowest will be the pair’s fifth film together, including Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, and He Got Game.
Lee told Deadline the film will arrive next summer. A24 will release Highest 2 Lowest in theaters before it receives a global launch on AppleTV+.
