Tyler, the Creator has a “supporter” in one of his musical heroes, André 3000.
The New Blue Sun musician was interviewed by Nardwuar the Human Serviette during Camp Flog Gnaw last month, where he performed among the likes of Sexyy Red, Laila!, Mustard, Omar Apollo, and of course, the festival’s mastermind Tyler, the Creator. André gave Tyler props around the 6:30-minute mark of the video below and recalled how they met.
André confirmed that the two met backstage at Coachella, in what would’ve been 2014, when he co-headlined the festival as part of Outkast with Big Boi.
“He came in my dressing room, but I knew about him from before. I think I talked to him on the phone first before I actually met him,” André recalled of meeting Tyler.
On performing at CFG, André called it “fun.” “I’m a supporter of Tyler, man,” he continued. “I think he has a certain energy and attracts a certain energy, so I’m happy to kind of support that. I’m happy that he gave us the chance to play. It’s kind of like we’re playing this instrumental music at this festival with all these youngins, and they were with it.”
Tyler came up again around the 14 minutes in, when André discussed his former Cartoon Network show, Class of 3000, which lasted for two seasons from 2006 to 2008. “My very first conversation with Tyler, we were on the phone and he said, ‘I know all the songs from ‘Class of 3000.’ … And I was like ‘Whoa, for real? You remember those songs? He’s like, ‘Yeah.’ That’s Tyler. He knows music, man.”
André called the show experience “a lot of fun” and shared that he’d recently revisited the show, hinting that “we’re hoping to do something new with it.”
André’s been close with Tyler for some time, even seeking the Chromakopia artist’s advice when it came to the final version of New Blue Sun.
“[H]e was listening to one of the songs and he was like, ‘It sounds like you’re chasing a butterfly through a garden and I figured it out. It helped me to figure out how to do this,’” André said of Tyler to NPR.
