Keith Lee opened up about surviving a suicide attempt.

While sitting down with Shannon Sharpe for his Club Shay Shay podcast, the 28-year-old TikTok-famous food critic shared details about his tumultuous relationship with his father around the 2:09:40 mark in the video linked above.

Lee likened his father, who grew up without his own dad in inner-city Detroit, to the old-school parenting akin to Denzel Washington’s character Troy in August Wilson’s Fences.

“As a kid, we didn’t really have much of a relationship at all,” said Lee, before describing his dad as a provider who worked nonstop. “He was very typical. Go to work, bring the bacon home, get the biggest plate, get the biggest chicken wings, go upstairs, go to sleep, do the same thing the next day.”

The social media star described the time the two reached a boiling point during his senior year of high school.

Following a heated argument where his father told him he couldn’t go somewhere, Lee defiantly told him, “Who are you telling me I ain’t going somewhere?”

“I was in a very deep dark depression, to a place where nothing mattered anymore,” Lee said of his mindset during the incident. “He was like, ‘Let’s go to the backyard.’ We got into it, did whatever we was about to do. He got in the car, left, went with his friends, and he told me that his friends was like, ‘He gotta go. He can’t live in your house and treat you like that, speak to you like that. You gotta go home and get him out of there.’”

Lee recounted a chilling moment when his father returned in the middle of the night, sat on the bed with an unspecified object, and said, “If you move, something’s about to happen.”

“I remember sitting up and that’s when he told me like, ‘We ain’t gotta have no relationship … You don’t ever talk to me like that. You don’t ever treat me like that, and we won’t have no problems. But [if] happens again, it’s over with.’ You can read between the lines,” Lee said. “That put me into a place of like, ‘If you gon’ do it, I’m gonna do it before you do it.’”

Lee recalled stepping outside and creating a makeshift noose from his father’s collection of ties, standing on a cooler, and pushing it off of his feet.

“I’m in the air for maybe like what felt like 10 seconds,” he recalled. “I’m at the point where you start trying to regress but it’s too late. So I’m trying to grab the tie, I’m trying to pull myself up. My dad sees me … He came, picked me up, took me off them ties, and told me how much he loved me. And that’s why I’m here today.”

The social media personality said hearing his father say he loved him was the first time he “felt it,” and that the suicide attempt helped to mend their relationship in the long run.

“It was awkward after that, like, he just saw his son try to take his own life. So it was like, it can’t just get back to normal immediately, right? But there was a level of like, ‘We both got to try for this.’”

Fortunately for both of them, Lee and his father are in a great place today and calls him his “best friend.”

With his wife Ronni, Keith Lee shares daughters Karter, 4, and Riley, 2. Lee says his father was spending time with his granddaughters in Texas at the time of the interview.
