Big Sean is expressing his gratitude to Tyler Perry for revisiting part of his family’s history in new film The Six Triple Eight.

The Better Me Than You rapper attended the film’s premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Sean and his brother Brett, along with mother Myra Anderson, held pictures of their late grandmother Mildred V. Leonard, who served in the Army during World War II and died in 2014.

In 2022, Leonard received a posthumous Congressional Gold Medal and was among the first Black female captains in the service. The plot of The Six Triple Eight, directed by Perry, focuses on the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only Women’s Army Corps unit of color during the war.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere, Sean reflected on his grandmother’s legacy and expressed gratitude to Perry for making the film, which releases to theaters on Friday.

“I told Tyler Perry how thankful I was because it’s such an overlooked crucial piece of American history and Black history,” the Detroit artist told the outlet.

“The 6888th Battalion connected millions and millions with over 17 million pieces of mail where there was no other means of communication to families and information about loved ones,” he continued. “They were fighting their own war, being strong Black women during segregation and fighting for their country.”

He concluded, “I’m just proud of them. Not just my grandmother, proud of all of them. I’m happy to be raised by such strong Black women that are embedded in my DNA and I’m forever grateful for it. It’s a super emotional night.”

Sean referenced his grandmother on his 2015 track “One Man Can Change the World,” with lines “a female Black captain” and “when being Black you had to extra-extra try.”

Following its theatrical release, The Six Triple Eight will be available for streaming on Netflix on Dec. 20.
