Damar Hamlin was at the center of one of the most dramatic moments in NFL history. The Buffalo Bills safety experienced a life-threatening cardiac arrest on January 2, 2023, during a Monday Night Football game. Medical personnel rushed to his side, performing CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) to restore his heartbeat and save his life.
Thankfully, not only did he survive but he’s been starting for the Bills this season. The incident brought widespread attention to the importance of CPR and AED training. Since his recovery, Hamlin has been advocating for CPR education and defibrillator accessibility through his Chasing M’s Foundation, using his experience to help protect others.
Earlier this month, we caught up with Hamlin at Advertising Week New York to talk about his impactful CPR initiatives with his Chasing M’s Foundation and his recent partnership with Snapchat. He shared why hands-on involvement is key to his mission of community empowerment. We also talked about his goals for this NFL season, philanthropy, and his growing fashion line…

Complex: Can you tell us about what you’re doing with Snapchat?
DaMar Hamlin: I’m here in New York City, working with Snapchat and my foundation, the Chasing M’s Foundation. I’ve been doing my CPR tour for the last 20 months. I’ve been able to give away $700,000 worth of AED [Defibrillators] and get more than thousands of people trained in CPR.
We did a corporate event today, working with the employees of Snapchat to get trained in CPR. That’s just the next step, doing corporate partnerships, going to big companies and making sure that employees internally are trained in CPR.
We obviously understand why this is near and dear to you. No one would blame you if you were like, “That’s in the past. I’m just a football player.” But you made this your mission. Why was it important to do that?
DH: I know the importance of it because I’ve experienced it. I know the community that I come from, it’s not comfortable for us to talk about. We shy away from things like this. So using who I am as a person to step into a lane like this, I know the impact that it can make on my community. I [just want] to make a difference.
What’s next on your mission? Because you do have a full-time job, but you’re finding time to dive into this.
DH: Next step is staying locked in throughout the season. It’s a big year for me. Just getting back to what I always knew I could be at and just growing as a player on the field first and foremost.
My main focus is just staying in the growth mindset, never settling, always learning, continuing to grow my foundation, and continuing to do unique things like this within the philanthropy space. Continue my mission on giving back to the youth.
Not only did we do the event with Snapchat, but we also had youth organizations all across New York come up and we were able to give away some AEDs to them as well, which enables the kids to be able to chase their dreams safely. My mission as a person is continuing to invest, man.
You said “hands-on” and you are that literally and figuratively. You could just be a billboard and it might be enough in some situations, but you’re literally doing demos, putting these situations together. Why was that part important?
DH: I’ve always watched the people that I looked up to in my life be hands-on with whatever they were talking about. Like you said, you can be that billboard, but more is felt up close and personal when you are there.
I always grew up searching for an example within what I wanted to do, which was football. I didn’t have that. I would look at certain people who kind of had that person who was in the NFL around them as like, okay, that’s what I wanted to be.
So that was kind of one of my driving forces to first and foremost, to make it to the NFL. I wanted to make it to be able to go back to my community and show kids this is how you do it. Being able to have someone to show them the blueprint. That’s something that I try to do for my little brother who’s nine years old. Not only him, but my entire community, my entire city of Pittsburgh. So that was my first example of wanting to be the example, and then go back and show the example.
I have to ask about football. This is a big year for you. I know you told your front office before the season, I’m going to be your starter. What has this year meant for you?
DH: Yeah, this year has meant everything to me to have the trust of my teammates, my coaches, the organization to be able to be one of the 11 to help us get a win each and every Sunday. I don’t take that for granted at all. I walk with that every day just knowing how much adversity I have had to overcome.
Do you feel like you’re fulfilling your goals this year?
DH: This year my goal was to just be present in every moment. I’ve walked this whole journey by taking it one day at a time, one step at a time. I don’t want to get too caught up in goals, statistics, stats, anything of the matter. I just want to be 110% present in each moment. I think that’s the way that I will be most appreciative and I’ll be happiest with myself by just doing that right there
Last one, your love for fashion. I see the product, I see you have your own brand. Where does that come from and what’s next for you in fashion?
DH: What’s next for me is 2024, Chasing Ms fall line is dropping soon. It’s hard to juggle passions. Explore all of ’em. I’ve kind of been that way my entire life, but I’m fully invested with football. That’s my number one.
But that 2024 fall line for Chasing Ms is dropping. As a young kid, I used to bleach my jeans, I used to cut my jeans. I used to wear four layers of socks to school just to have black, white, black, white. I’ve always been in uniforms, so I would wear a different color uniform underneath another polo to have a different color coming off of over the collar—just to be unique and different. It’s just a different expression of myself through a different passion.
