Joaquin Phoenix could have very well been the only Joker we knew.
The actor chatted with Rick Rubin for his Tetragrammaton podcast, in which Phoenix revealed that Christopher Nolan approached him for the role in 2008’s The Dark Knight that ended up going to Heath Ledger.
“Actually, I remember I talked to Chris Nolan about The Dark Knight and that wasn’t going to happen for whatever reason—I think I wasn’t ready then,” Phoenix said at around the 2:05:30 hour mark.
He then praised Ledger’s performance as the memorable villain.
“I can’t imagine what it’d be if we didn’t have Heath Ledger’s performance in that film,” Phoenix added. “And I don’t know whether Christopher Nolan was coming to me saying, ‘You are definitely the person.’ I can’t remember the context of how we met, but I know that we met and my feeling was, ‘I shouldn’t do this.’ But maybe he also was like, ‘You’re not the guy.’ I couldn’t say.”
When Rubin commented that it worked out as it should, particularly because The Dark Knight became a juggernaut and that Phoenix later got his turn in 2019’s Joker and this year’s Joker: Folie à Deux, Joaquin responded, “Absolutely.”
The Dark Knight arrived in theaters just months after Ledger died from an accidental overdose in early 2008. Unfortunately, the actor never saw the response to his performance and posthumously received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor the following year.
In the new musical Joker: Folie À Deux, Phoenix reprises his role as Arthur Fleck who is institutionalized at Arkham and waiting to go to trial for committing crimes as Joker. Simultaneously, Fleck also finds true love and a penchant for singing. In addition to Phoenix, the cast stars Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz.
Joker: Folie à Deux, the anticipated sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 hit, premiered at the Venice International Film Festival to mixed reviews. While the original grossed over $1 billion and praised Phoenix’s performance, the sequel has elicited similar reactions. Critics highlight Gaga’s “compelling” portrayal of Harley Quinn and commend the production design, but many note narrative weaknesses, with IndieWire’s David Ehrlich calling it “excruciatingly boring” and giving it a C-.
