Condolences are pouring in for the family of Tommy Lazzaro, a former Central Michigan University quarterback who died in an apparent hunting accident at age 27.
CMU confirmed the tragic news in a press release on Thursday, Dec. 26, saying the 27-year-old alumnus was killed Sunday in Destin, Florida. Authorities said the incident occurred on the Eglin Air Force Base, where Lazzaro was pronounced, and all involved parties are cooperating with the investigation.
Lazzaro began playing for the CMU football team in 2016 and played 20 career games with the Chippewas until he graduated in 2019. During his final year of college, Lazzaro revived his nickname “Touchdown Tommy,” as he scored seven rushing touchdowns in his last five games. He finished his CMU career with a total of 16 touchdowns — 11 rushing and five passing.
Lazzaro spoke about his college experience in a 2019 feature in CM Life.
“This place has given me a home, an education, a place to meet some of my best friends – guys I’ll know for the rest of my life,” Lazzaro said about CMU.
In 2019, his teammates honored him with the Kurt Dobronski Award, which is given to a player who “demonstrates great effort, intensity and appreciation for the Chippewa football program.”
“When we took over the program, Tommy was truly our leader in so many ways,” said CMU head coach Jim McElwain. “CMU Football was blessed to have him and will always remember him for all he did for many of us. He will be missed by all of the Chippewas.”
After graduating with an entrepreneurship degree, Lazzaro joined the United States Army. He was an active sergeant at the time of his death.
“SGT Lazzaro’s dedication to his military career was evident in the professionalism and pride he brought to his role,” his obituary read. “His service was marked by bravery and a commitment to protecting others, earning him the respect and admiration of his peers. Beyond his military accomplishments, Thomas was known for his compassionate and jovial spirit, a personality that brought light and joy to everyone around him.”
Lazzaro is survived by his parents, Tom and Lisa Lazzaro, and his sister, Lexie. A celebration of life for Lazzaro is set for Saturday in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
