Thanks to the internet, a terminally ill fan got the chance to play Borderlands 4 early.
Last month, Caleb McAlpine, a 37-year-old gamer and “die hard” Borderlands fan, revealed his late stage terminal cancer in a heartfelt post on Reddit.
“In August I was diagnosed with late stage 4 terminal cancer. It started in my rectum but spread to my entire liver. I was given 7-12mo and IF chemo works to slow the progression of the cancer I still have less than 2 years,” he wrote.
“So I am a die hard borderlands fan and don’t know if I will be around for borderlands 4. Is there anyone that knows how to get in touch with gearbox to see if there is a way to play the game early? Long shot but thought I would try. Thanks for your help.”
McAlpine’s post gained significant attention, including over 19,000 upvotes on Reddit. It eventually led Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford to personally respond, promising to make McAlpine’s wish come true.
“Thanks everyone who reached out to point me to this,” Pitchford wrote on X in October. “Caleb and I are now chatting via e-mail and we’re going to do whatever we can to make something happen.”
In a new update, McAlpine shared that he visited Gearbox’s Texas headquarters last week and thanked everyone for their help in making his dream come true.
“So gearbox flew me and a friend down 1st class the 20th of this month and we got to tour the studio and meet an amazing bunch of people from some of the devs of all of the borderlands games up to Randy the CEO,” he shared to Reddit on Monday.
He continued, “We got to play what they have for Borderlands 4 so far and it was amazing. I don’t know if I will be around when the game comes out but I just want to say thank you to all of you for all of your love and support and for helping in making this happen. It truly was an amazing experience and it was just awesome.”
“Caleb is cool – a legit gamer who knows Borderlands inside and out. I’m glad he got a chance to play. I am praying he makes to when we are done. Thanks, internet, for signal boosting Caleb’s story,” Pitchford wrote in a separate post on X.
“We’re deeply thankful to the Borderlands community for rallying around Caleb after he shared his story several weeks ago. His courage, strength, and determination are an inspiration to us all. Our team was honored to host him last week at our studio,” Gearbox shared on X.
Borderlands 4 is slated for release in 2025.
