It would take two years for Denzel Washington to win an Academy Award for Best Actor after losing to Kevin Spacey in 2000.

Washington, who stars in upcoming action-adventure Gladiator II, told Esquire’s Ryan D’Agostino in the cover story published Tuesday that he recalled feeling embittered by the loss.

Spacey won in the Best Actor category for his role of Lester Burnham in 1999 psychological dark comedy-drama American Beauty, while Washington was nominated for his portrayal of the titular boxer in The Hurricane, aka Rubin Carter.

Washington, who won in the Best Supporting Actor category in 1990 for Glory, would eventually win for Best Actor in 2002 for Training Day.

“At the Oscars, they called Kevin Spacey’s name for American Beauty,” Washington told Esquire. “I have a memory of turning around and looking at him, and nobody was standing but the people around him. And everyone else was looking at me. Not that it was this way. Maybe that’s the way I perceived it. Maybe I felt like everybody was looking at me. Because why would everybody be looking at me? Thinking about it now, I don’t think they were.”

Washington added that he was “sure” that he “went home and drank that night” after Spacey was awarded.

“I had to,” he continued. “I don’t want to sound like, ‘Oh, he won my Oscar,’ or anything like that. It wasn’t like that. And you know, there was talk in the town about what was going on over there on that side of the street, and that’s between him and God. I ain’t got nothing to do with that. I pray for him. That’s between him and his maker.”

Washington also discussed his journey of sobriety for the Esquire interview, explaining that he couched excessive drinking under the guise of wine tastings but would drink two bottles of wine in a day.

Before The Hurricane, Washington’s previous Best Actor nomination came in 1993 for the Spike Lee-directed historical biopic Malcolm X. Post-Training Day, Washington received three more Best Actor nominations for Flight in 2013, Fences in 2017, and The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2022.

Washington told Esquire that after his second Best Actor loss, his wife, actress Pauletta Washington, began voting in his place for the Academy Awards.

“I went through a time then when [my wife] Pauletta would watch all the Oscar movies—I told her, I don’t care about that. Hey: ‘They don’t care about me? I don’t care,'” Washington recalled. “You vote. You watch them. I ain’t watching that. I gave up. I got bitter. My pity party.”

Washington could return to the Oscars race in the Best Supporting Actor category as nominations are scheduled to be announced on Jan. 17, 2025.
