070 Shake pays homage to Ye’s iconic “Mercy” flow on a new song from her recently released album, Petrichor.

On the track “What’s Wrong With Me,” Shake lifts Ye’s flow from his 2012 single “Mercy” (featuring 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz) and repurposes it as her own. Where Ye uses the style to tell listeners about an unforgettable party, Shake uses it to tell us about her heavy emotions.

“Stuck in this place, was just looking for placement/ Haven’t been home and forgot what this place meant,” she raps — a stark departure from Ye’s “I step in Def Jam’s building like I’m the shit/ Tell ’em give me fifty million or I’ma quit.”

Shake’s new album, Petrichor, is out today. In a statement, Shake’s team revealed that the title of the album comes from the word that’s “used to describe the smell of rain on arid soil after a long period of dry weather.”

The LP was released under the G.O.O.D. Music record label imprint. Two years ago, when we spoke to Shake ahead of an album release, she said of the label, “To be honest, just to keep it real with you, G.O.O.D. Music is not really a thing. Like, nobody works for G.O.O.D. Music. They don’t even exist. To be honest, I worked with Def Jam. Nobody works at G.O.O.D. Music, you know? So it’s really Def Jam, which has a legacy in itself.”

Shake joined G.O.O.D. Music in 2016 after Pusha T and Ye were impressed with the music that she made with the 070 collective. Over the years, she’s been on songs with Ye, such as “Ghost Town” and “Violent Crimes.”

In 2020, Shake dropped her debut album, Modus Vivdenti. Two years later, she followed up with You Can’t Kill Me.
