Featuring in Wonderland’s Autumn 24 issue, the 21-year-old Aussie prodigy discusses being co-signed by Pop royalty and music luminary Elton John, making collaboration an integral pillar of his unorthodox creative process, and finishing his “god damn album” amidst a recent relocation to LA.
Ruel’s approach to success is simple: break the rules. “People are given more room to be experimental in Pop nowadays,” says the 21-year-old Aussie prodigy. “To be seen or heard, you almost need to be a little jarring or bold to stand out. I think that’s really exciting compared to maybe five or 10 years ago when people thought everything had to stick to some kind of formula.”
This rebellious approach to music has served the singer-songwriter well. After his father took a shot in the dark and reached out to Grammy Award-winning producer, and now long-term collaborator, M-Phazes, Ruel was on his way to creating his debut solo single which would kickstart his success at just 13 with the gut-wrenching “Don’t Tell Me”. The release—which he describes as “a pretty crazy way to start off my career”—has since earned a staggering 58 million streams and caught the attention of none other than Pop royalty and music luminary Elton John, who not only co-signed the tune but suggested he’d ‘give up’ on making music altogether after hearing the track back in 2017.
While Ruel’s melodic tune may have had Elton considering relinquishing his Pop throne, others had more of a ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ mentality when it came to the burgeoning artist. By collaborating with modern Pop Prince, Omar Apollo, on the hazy “Want U Around” and jumping on the dreamy and dramatic “golden hour” remix with JVKE, Ruel has made his peers an integral pillar in his unorthodox creative process. “Who do people want next?” he laughs, when questioned about any upcoming collaborations.
